"HELP PLEASE"
I have been running MetaStock 7.02 on "Windows XP" for nearly 2 years and until now the program has worked fine. Starting last week, MetaStock has begun regularly crashing when trying to select another security (either by clicking on the fwd/bck arrow or typing the code out of my favorites list)
The Error Message reads:
MSwin.exe – Application Error
The instruction at “0x7c910c3f” referenced memory at “0x001f31dd”. The memory could not be “read”
Click on terminate the program.
The numbers are not always the same but the outcome is!!!!
There is also a similar message occurring, quoting: The memory could not be “written".
Note: I have tried to run the program in compatibility mode to no avail.
Any ideas please, before I drop kick the computer out the window.

Not sure, but try to look for: ‘temp’ files and files with ‘~’ try to get rid of ‘Smart charts’
Did you have crash stop? Like power failure? Or accidental switching of power switch? Looks that something did not close down properly.
Sometimes defragmenting helps a bit, and ‘Disk Cleanup’ helps sometimes too.
Try to uninstall and re-install the program.
Unfortunately I am not an expert, and I often bog down clueless. Hope you can get through this one without hurting your foot or computer.

Hit the wrong button sorry.
Hi Happy, I have tried all of the above without success. I have removed and reinstalled the program 4 times, defragged the computer, checked the disc for errors, written to the Equis support team and searched the microsort support site for faults/errors. I've even stood on my head, spun three times & screamed bloody murder "BUT" nothing works". Keep thinking mate, the answer is in the computer somewhere. All we need to do is dig deep enough. There's some smart people around here that will find the answer.

There are few more, but because you used Metastock OK, so they are less likely.
Not all Windows like all Metastocks or other way around.
You can try windows compatibility option. (Not too logical, as you used Meta before, but who knows)
If you did not have SP Pack before, maybe there is the problem.
Could be virus, try to start computer in safe mode and see if Meta is stable.
Could be clash with another program. Did you or somebody else put recently another program on your computer? Was it something installed by third party like video program? Display program?
Try to think when the problem started the very first time, and try to work back what changed on your computer.
Try restore point before the disaster, if you can think of when it happened or try all available restore points one by one starting with most recent one.

sentinel & Happy, The simple answer here is this ... MetaStock 7 is not 100% compatibility with Windows XP The only version(s) that are 100% tested with Windows XP is 8.x and 9.x There is not patch or fix for versions lower then 8, so there is nothing that anyone can do to help you on this matter; The only fix is to upgrade to either 8 or the current version 9. If you have time on your hands you can play with the compatibility settings XP has, but it will help a little but it will not make the program 100% fixed. So I'm sorry to be the giver of bad news.

Happy and Storm,
Funny you should say what you have. I have tried compatibility mode and it didn't work. I cracked the sh#*ts and bought MetaStock 8.0 through Paritech (advert for PARITECH !!!). When it arives, I will delete 7.0 and let you know how MS 8.0 performs. I read a message somewhere that says to delete 7.02 before downloading 8.0 to prevent any issues. I suspect that all of the windows XP upgrades Pack 1 & 2 may have corrupted "or" removed MS 7.02 ability to run compatibly with XP.
I will keep you up informed as to my plight.

PS: I forgot to mention that I tried several restore points back to early December 2005 pre my last windows update.
Guess what. That little effort didn't work either!!! expletive, expletive, expletive.

What is most intriguing that MetaStock worked for a while and then crashed.
Why it didn’t work all the time?

Happy & Storm,
I have no idea why it would work fine one minute and crash the next. Maybe some corrupt program or system files. I would have thought that by uninstalling and reinstalling the program would have fixed that though.
ANYWAY Problem solved. My upgrade arrived today. I uninstalled 7.02 an installed 8.0 and hey presto problem gone.

Interesting news regarding my previous problem. Last week my computer crashed big time with the dreaded "Blue screen of death". The problem turned out to be the "video card driver". We uninstalled the original VC driver and downloaded the updated version. The PC is now working better than ever. I wonder if this was the problem with MetaStock continually shutting down.

I wander if we ever find out for sure, but chances are that it was. As Metastock worked well and then stopped.
Either way, you are up and running and that's most important.

Happy & sentinel,
I can tell you 100%, that is is not a video card driver issue - When I was at Paritech I spent many hours with Jim Berg who loved 6.52 trying to get it work on XP, and I basically rebuilt his PC many times to get it working, but it did not work very well.
So all I can say is, if your 6.52 is working on XP, be thankful, but when it fails; its time to upgrade, as it will be the only way to fix it.
This issue reminds me about the new version of Symantec Internet Security 2006 - They will only work on Windows 2000 and XP now, you cant get the older version working on older systems any more, but thats not what we are here for.
Good luck

Thanks Storm, got this one cleared.
I'll be waiting for MS 10 it'll be probably closer to Tradestation, with definitely more grunt to do all sort of testing.
Good to have something like that when stock market goes nowhere.

My 7.o2 has been working great touch wood for about two years now. I had ver 8 but hated it so when back to my old trusty.
Thinking of getting ver9.

Ver 9 has the same 'hate' spots with some improvements.
I still wander who was the genius to make such a mockery out of stock folders handling.
Equis insists that it was public asking for it, but it wasn't me that's for sure.

pgale,
Why do you say you hated 8.0? What in particular did you dislike?
I don't see a great difference in 7.02 and 8.0, and no longer having trouble with the program which was my main concern.
A few extra's in 8.0

In Metastock 6 I could start program and for any exploration program would take all data and run.
In 8 Metastock and higher I have to pick up data virtually by hand to run exploration.
OK, I can have more than 2,000 stocks in one Folder, but come splits, consolidations, additions name changes and removals I have to do the update by hand.
Or pick up all the stocks by hand again, this is what I do once a month or once a quarter if too busy.
Of course there might be something I don’t know, as I am not much of a computer man. And I would be happy to find out as it takes me more than 1 hour to pick up 1200 stocks of interest

Good news is, that if you bought your Metastock program from reputable reseller, if you explain your problems there is good chance to get nice discount for upgrade.

Just saw this as am about to get V10 and am not sure if you resolved the crashing issue. Been a while since I have used MS - think it was V6 something. But seem to remember that I also had a crashing problem and in my case I resolved it by deleting all the msfl files in the A-Z folders. I wrote a batch file to do all the folders that saved a fair bit of time

It is great if you have good computer skills to get around different problems.
I am not so lucky, not that I did not have time to improve my computer skills, I just didn’t do it.

From what I understand, Equis improved areas of Metastock's security from the producer's point of view, and now updated version works with new Windows Vista operating system.
Of course, they put in RMO trading system, which in my opinion is just another shot at swing trading.
I do not have Metastock 10

Hi Equis have announced that Metastock prior to version 8 is not compatible with Windows XP and they have therefore stopped providing support for Metastocks of said versions. I understand that there are some here that have used MS6-7 for a number of years on XP without a hitch but suddenly experiencing crashes. As mentioned before the program is expected to be unstable on XP. The only long term solutions is to upgrade to a later version either MS v10 (for XP) or MS v10.1 (for Vista). A short term solution (that has worked for a small number of people) is to reinstall MS7.02. I call this a "jackpot solution" as some have tried to reinstall it about 6 times before it got running again. You might want to go down that path. I hope this helps.

Hi,
I too have suffered with the move from 7.02 to 8.01 for all the same reasons that people have mentioned. That was back when I was still running 95 and after a few weeks, I uninstalled it and went back to 7.02. When 9 came out I phoned up Paritech and spoke to them about it but it seems the things which make 7.02 useful are still not back so never upgraded. I now run on XP and dont get any new issues. The one really bad issue I do get is always related to number of files within the directory and it seems to be caused by all the warrants which never get cleaned up properly. Here is the procedure I use to sort it out (its not that much fun) 1) run the downloader and start menu option Tools > Test 2) Under options turn off reporting of the following errors 1081 1091 1102 Also set max errors to as high as allowed 3) Use the browse button to select e.g. AU-ASX\A (you then need to do this 26 times) 4) Dont try to select individual stocks, just click on test - you will get a prompt asking whether you want to check all securities 5) Look through the report and identify any securities with multiple and serious looking errors 6) If you try to open the security in either Metastock or the Downloader it will crash 7) Make a note of the ones with these errors and then delete them (I just use Metastock for this) 8) Check through the folder for any other security which is not required (in my case I remove most of the warrants). 9) Use DataDirector to re-download the history for any securities which were corrupt and are still required.
Regards, Brenton
